Brian Junkin Wins Ward 7 By-election Race

Brian Junkin has been declared the winner of the by-election held on January 25th. Brian defeated Gail Thomassen and Audry Holden. The race was relatively close, with Brian receiving 731 votes and Thomassen finishing with 663 votes. Holden received 277 votes. Congratulations to Brian. For those of you who missed it, a debate between the three Ward 7 by-election candidates was held at the Bobcaygeon Legion last Thursday, January 7. Two of our local publications attended and have reported on the event. The articles are relatively short in length and depth, so they don’t provide a great deal of information that might help sway those of you who remain undecided. Ballots have been mailed – Call the CoKL if you didn’t receive yours

Ballot kits for the Ward 7 By-Election have been mailed and should have arrived at your residence by now. If you have not received your ballot kit, you may not be on the voters list. If you didn’t receive your ballot kit, you can call Judy Currins, the City’s Returning Officer, at 705-324-9411 Ext. 1295 to try to correct any problems that they might have reaching you. To cast your vote, ballots should be filled out and back in the mail by January 20th. Alternatively, ballots can be hand delivered up until 8:00 p.m. on January 25 at the Bobcaygeon Municipal Service Centre. Please check out our By-Election page for more information.

By-Election News: All Candidates Meeting

There will be an all-candidates meeting on January 7th at 7:00 p.m. at the Bobcaygeon Legion. This will give everyone a chance to hear the candidates in person. Although now format has been publicly announced yet, one can reasonably assume that there will be plenty of oppostunity to ask the candidates questions.

By-Election Update

There are currently three candidates in the running for the Ward 7 by-election. They are Audrey Holden, Brian Junkin, and Gail Thomassen. The deadline for nominations is Dec. 10, so we’ll let you know if anyone else throws their hat in the ring.

Several members of the SPA board met with Brian and Gail to impress upon them the specific concerns of Sturgeon Point. Audry Holden will be coming to visit this coming week for a similar meeting.

We’ve set up a By-Election page with links to the candidates’ information. We’ll keep this page updated with links to election-related news articles throughout the campaign. You’ll also find a listing of important election dates.

Important: If you haven’t received a ballot in the mail by January 12 you need to contact the City By-Election Office.

Ward 7 Byelection Jan. 25, 2010 – mail in ballot

The City of Kawartha Lakes will hold a byelection to fill the councillor’s seat that has been empty since Pete Cziraky succumbed to cancer in September. The election will be conducted through a mail in ballot, so there won’t be any traditional voting stations or a voting day. Ballot kits will be mailed to voters by early January and completed ballots should be dropped in the mail by January 20th. Alternativel,y the ballots can be dropped off at the Bobcaygeon Municipal Service Centre (123 East St W.) or at City Hall (26 Francis St., Lindsay) by January 22.

The deadline for nominations is on Dec. 11. Check back here for updates as the election process progresses.
