News for the week of September 2, 2012

This year Sturgeon Point Union Church is participating in the
Kawartha Lakes Door’s Open program
on Sunday, September 9th from 10:30am to 4pm.
In addition to the church, doors will be open at the
Sturgeon Point Golf Club and the Upper Wharf.
The Doors Open program promotes Ontario’s heritage by
organizing tours of different regions in the province.

News for the week of August 19, 2012

The Stephen Lewis FoundationSusan Benson provided an update on the Salvation Food Drive for this year. Thanks to the generous donations of the community, a total of 55 bags of food and $775 was collected. Thanks to Susan and Megan Thomas for your efforts again this year.

Join Ione Grover for a fund-raising book signing on Friday, August 24th. All proceeds support the Stephen Lewis Foundation’s Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign.

Flutist Tim Crouch

Honorary Pastoral Associate Anne Simmonds has a series of workshops happening this Fall.

This past Sunday church-goers had a special surprise when flutist Tim Crouch performed.

News for the week of August 5, 2012

The Annual Salvation Army Food Drive takes place on the long weekend. Following the success of last year’s format, non-perishable food donations will be made in the plastic bags that have been provided by Sobey’s. In the afternoon on Monday, Aug.6th volunteers will drive through the Point picking up your bag from your front step or porch. Donations can also be dropped off at the Church or at the running races on Monday morning.

Rev.Desmond Howard celebrates his 50th year of Ordination this year! We once again welcome Desmond back to our church.

A reminder that this Friday, July 21st, historian Paul Arculus will be at the church speaking on George Crandell and the lake steamers.

News for the week of July 1, 2012

Church began this week with the announcement of members of the congregation and community that we have lost since last September. Our condolences go out to their families and friends.

Mary Perlmutter – Mary and Sydney have been long time residents of the area.

Lloyd Roberson – An active member of the community and former Reeve for the Point. The family has mentioned that there will be a celebration of life at the Royal Canadian Legion on Tuesday, July 10th from 2pm to 5pm with a Colour Guard Service starting a 2:30pm.

Art Upton – husband of Audrey Rutherford-Upton, passed away on Tuesday, June 26th.

Births

There have been six babies born since September.

  • Sarah McKellar & Dave had a litle girl. A first grandchild for Maureen and Glen McKellar.
  • Chris & Sandy Holt had a little boy. A grandson for Joan and Herb Young.
  • Chloe Brown & Shaun had a little boy. A grandson for Mary and Peter Brown.
  • Christie and Shaun Cox had a baby boy. A grandson for Lynne Manning.
  • Peter & Joanne Howard had a baby boy. A grandson for Jim and Sharon Howard.
  • Alison & John Fegan had a little girl. A granddaughter for Dave Kennedy.

At the July 1st service, Rev. Winsor spoke about the El Hogar Project in Honduras.

A reminder that on Saturday, July 7th historian Randall Speller will be at the Church at 9:30am. The topic is the Business History of Fenelon Falls from 1832 to 1900. Find out more on the Sturgeon Point History Project site.

On Sunday, July 8th the service will be provided by Debbie Sherwin of the St.Andrew’s United Church in Beaverton.
