Beach Testing Results

An astute reader of this blog pointed out that our Beach Testing Results link on our Links Page wasn’t working. This pointer is appreciated, and the oversight has been remedied. In light of the recent algae bloom advisory elsewhere on Sturgeon Lake, this is an appropriate time to remind Sturgeon Pointers that our beach is tested on a weekly basis. Those test results are also posted weekly and you can see them by clicking here. Interested readers can find this link permanently located on the Links Page under the Weather, Traffic, Fishing, Swimming header.

You’ll be happy to know that our beach has faired very well over recent history. In any case, Happy Swimming!

Sturgeon Lake Lagoon Blue-Green Algae Advisory Lifted

Some of you have expressed some concern over the advisory that was recently posted by the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (HKPR) District Health Unit. That advisory was lifted today after the Ministry of the Environment’s testing at the affected area determined that the toxins produced by the algae bloom no longer pose a threat to human health. The algae bloom did not affect the waters off of Sturgeon Point. You can read the news release by clicking here.
Any health advisories affecting the area around Sturgeon Point will be posted right here on this web site. Serious advisories that impact our normal activities on and around the lake will be sent out by email to the SPA email distribution list as soon as we are aware of them. If you’re not on that list drop us a line and ask to be put on it.

Bear Safety in Sturgeon Point

It’s that time of year again, and we would like to remind all area residents about the importance of bear safety in our community.

There have been several incidents in the past few weeks where bears have been very active, tipping garbage cans, rummaging looking for any source of food.

Please help by ensuring that all garbage is secure, and putting your garbage out until the morning is also a good practice.

The Ministry of Natural Resources has released the provincial bear reporting hot-line number. Its toll-free and a part of the Bear Wise program, which educates people on how to avoid attracting bears. The number to remember is 1-866-514-2327.
