Sturgeon Lake Sailing Club Awarded Regatta of the YEAR!

On January 28, 2011, the Canadian Yachting Association announced that Sturgeon Lake Sailing Club was the winner of the 2010 CYA Regatta of the Year. The CYA City of Kingston Regatta of the Year Award will be presented by CYA to SLSC for its hosting of the 2010 Canadian Laser Masters Championships that took place over 3 days of great sailing in July 2010.

The Masters Regatta involved a huge effort from an army of Sturgeon volunteers – it was in every way a community wide effort.  Many people provided beds to the sailors; many prepared the community breakfasts and dinners; many were on the water helping out; the harbour team got boats launched and back to shore; the scorers were timely; the prizes were wonderful…The masters sailors – aged 35 to 77- raved about the accommodations, about the meals, about the racing, about the surroundings and above all about how organized and helpful and friendly the volunteers were.  The Sailing Club extends a giant thank you to everyone who pitched in to make this regatta what it was – the best in Canada for 2010!

Call for beds for sailors

This year out very own Sturgeon Lake Sailing Club (SLSC) has been selected to host the Canadian Laser Masters Championships on July 23 to 25. The club obviously has a tremendous reputation and continues to raise the bar by attracting such high level competitions year after year.

One of the reasons for this success is that each and every sailing competion is a community effort, and every year Sturgeon Point has welcomed the participants of Provincial and National level competitions by hosting them within our small community. This was often done by simply providing a welcoming smile and a part of a yard for young sailors to set up tents.

This year, because the Masters competion involves mature sailors from 35 to 75(!) years of age, we are looking more for beds rather than outdoor space to pitch a tent. No meals will need to be provided – sailors will be fed communally at the sailing club and elsewhere. Sailors will also provide their own bedding.

If you think you can provide a bed or two for some sailors, please contact the SLSC at [email protected] . They will be thrilled to hear from you. The club asks that you do so before June 15th so that they can assess the number of beds that will be available.

Sturgeon Point in the News

Recent activities in our small corner of the world have attracted some interest from the media. The Park in the Woods project was mentioned in both The Lindsay Post and The Promoter.

The park project is certainly deserving of attention, but Sturgeon Point isn’t just about the park. Kawartha Life thought that the SLSC’s ongoing program deserved some attention in their big summer issue, and we’ve captured that article for you too. If you see any mention of Sturgeon Point in the news, please let us know. We’ll archive the articles and preserve them for all to enjoy over the years to come.  And if you have clippings of past articles about our community, we’d much appreciate your sharing them with us so that we can build up an archival history of our community on our web site.
