Village Signs Up for Auction!

You may have seen the new signs at the two Village entrances – at the golf course and the main entrance.

The old signs will be up for auction beginning July 1st! (<– click link!!)

The old signs commemorate Sturgeon Point history and you can own one of the beautifully, hand-painted signs to proudly display on your boat house, bunkie, garage, in your rec room, etc., as a show of pride and love for Sturgeon Point.

You will need to create an account to participate in the Auction. It’s a simple process and takes only a minute or two.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to own an artistic representation of our Village’s history and to kick start the fundraising for the Upper Wharf Restoration campaign (coming soon!).

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Off-Road Vehicles in CoKL

There has been a lot of talk, and some community concerns voiced, around the changes made to provincial legislation regarding Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) use on highways and municipal roads in the City of Kawartha Lakes.  As a result, a task force has been formed and “the goal is to provide Council with recommendations based on research and public consultation that will help expand and enhance ORV use activity across the municipality.”

At least one member of the Sturgeon Point community has already sent an email to Councillor Doug Elmslie and the Hon. Laurie Scott (Haliburton—Kawartha Lakes—Brock), Minister of Infrastructure, voicing concern about these vehicles being allowed to be driven on the small roads in our community.

While SPA is not expressing an official opinion, we encourage all members to become informed and to voice their own opinions.  You can contact Councillor Elmslie, Minister Scott and the Chair of the ORV Task Force, at the following coordinates:

Bears have been seen in the Point! An important reminder about bear safety.

Last night a large adult bear and three yearling bears were seen in the Point dining at a resident’s bird feeder. From the amount of garbage strewn onto Irene Avenue this morning it was clear the bears had been through the Point.

Garbage collection is pretty early (starting at 7am) and apparently the driver is now picking up on both sides of the street at the same time. Some residents may be putting garbage out the night before so they don’t miss pick up and this is attracting the bears.

The resident called the Bear Wise line (1-866-514-2327) and a Ministry of Natural Resources agent took the information and created a report. She was asked to take the bird feeder down as the bears will return to their food source until they find they cannot get anything at that location any longer.

Please remember to remove your bird feeders and only put garbage out the morning of pick up.

If you see a bear, please call the Bear Wise line at 1-866-514-2327 and file a report. They will track the number of incidents and be able to act should there be a safety risk.

If there is immediate danger, please call 9-1-1.

The Bear Wise information is also under Community at https://www.sturgeonpoint.com/community/safety-at-the-point/
