Please be aware of Local Fire Codes

Careful with fires!
Careful with fires!

Among summer’s favourite pastimes is time spent outdoors with friends and neighbours around a campfire. Here in Sturgeon Point there is a particular sensitivity to this issue because of the high density of old wooden cottages along our streets that would quickly succumb to a fire. The large number of mature pine and cedar trees are also vulnerable to open flames. The setting of open air fires is governed by the bylaws of the City of Kawartha Lakes. You can read a condensed version of these bylaws here. For the full blown, un-edited version of the bylaw you can click here. This is a serious issue that can affect all of us and deserves our attention. We encourage you to be aware of the local bylaws governing the setting of fires.

Summer sailing season has arrived!

The sailing program starts up for the summer on Monday July 6 at the Sturgeon Lake Sailing Club. Hundreds of local kids have been attending the great summer sailing programs offered at the club for over 50 years, and this year’s group of instructors are busy getting everything ready for another summer of sun and sail. Geared towards youngsters between the ages of 8 to 16 years of age, sailing club runs every weekday from 8:30 to 12:30 until August 28. Head over to the SLSC web site to find out more. Highly recommended!

Tennis anyone?

This is a reminder that tennis camp and lessons will be available again this summer. Appleton Tennis will be serving up another smash at the Appleton Cottage Tennis Court on Sandy Point Road. Tennis ace Daniel Austin-Appleton, a TPA Certified Pro, will be serving up fun for kids and adults. Please check out the Tennis page on this web site for more information.
