This week and next, the City of Kawartha Lakes are holding meetings to discuss the Heritage and Cultural Plan.  This includes discussing the heritage and cultural aspect of Sturgeon Point.

There will be representation from SPA at tonight’s meeting, but we are encouraging all to attend.  We apologize about the short notice, but we just have been informed about these meetings.

November 28, 2012 – The City of Kawartha Lakes with funding support from the Government of Ontario is undertaking a Cultural Master Plan and Mapping Inventory project. The purpose of the project is to leverage the rich cultural resources of the community to support planning and economic development, and to increase awareness of these resources for both residents and tourists.

Here is a blurb about these meetings from the City’s website:

The City of Kawartha Lakes with funding support from the Government of Ontario is undertaking a Cultural Master Plan and Mapping Inventory project. The purpose of the project is to leverage the rich cultural resources of the community to support planning and economic development, and to increase awareness of these resources for both residents and tourists.

The project is being undertaken in two phases. The first is a Cultural Mapping process aimed at identifying the rich and diverse cultural assets that exist across the City. A significant amount of research has been completed but we need YOUR input and knowledge to ensure we capture as complete an inventory as possible. Please participate by attending one of following three Cultural Mapping Forums.

Dec 5th 2012: 4:00PM – 6:00PM @ Fenelon Falls Community Centre – FENELON FALLS

7 Policy Papers have been developed so far in the process:

Below is the announcement the CoKL made about the Secondary Plan process:

City of Kawartha Lakes Community Based
Secondary Plans for Bobcaygeon, Fenelon Falls, Lindsay, Omemee and Woodville
Notice of Project Launch

The City of Kawartha Lakes is studying the long-term growth and development of five settlement areas: Bobcaygeon, Fenelon Falls, Lindsay, Omemee and Woodville. The study and resulting Secondary Plans are being undertaken in accordance with the Planning Act of Ontario.

The City of Kawartha Lakes continues to experience significant growth in year-round and seasonal population. The City wishes to ensure that continued growth in the five settlement areas is managed in a sustainable way that recognizes the integrity and unique aspects of each community. The Community Based approach will involve stakeholders and explore visions and options for future development.

Public and agency comments will be incorporated into the study and resulting Secondary Plans. There will be numerous opportunities for public involvement which will be advertised in the future.

In 2011, a new method for gathering food drive donations was introduced where bags of non-perishable food items were picked up from door steps in the community. Volunteers gathered 77 bags of food and collected $875.

Due to the success of last year’s efforts, the volunteers from the Sturgeon Point Union Church and
the Sturgeon Lake Sailing Club will once again be dropping off empty grocery bags at
your home or cottage on the August long weekend.

Kindly fill up the bag with non perishable items in
support of this year’s Food Drive.

The volunteers will be around again on Monday August 6th between 3:00-5:00pm
to pick up your filled grocery bag. Please leave your bag at your front door step or porch
for collection by Monday afternoon.

Other Drop Off Options:
Sunday August 5th, Sturgeon Point Union Church Service
Monday August 6th, Civic Weekend Running Races at Swannanoa

Donations are also gratefully accepted with
cheques made out to:

Salvation Army Food Bank

Hope everyone enjoys this fun filled weekend!
