Sturgeon Point Properties

Hello Sturgeon Pointers,

The last of our social events at the park for 2012 was a great (if not wet) success!  Thanks to Judy Havercort for organizing, and to everyone who contributed to and participated in the Halloween Party and Trick or Treating on October 27th.  The park has now been prepared for the winter: the port-a-potty has been removed, the grounds have been tended to and the toys have been wrangled.  We encourage people to continue to use the park throughout the fall/winter/spring since it is just as enjoyable now as in the summer.

There appears to be an anonymous network of generous people who donate toys to the Park and Public beach.  This is greatly appreciated by the kids and parents as it adds to the fun of spending time at both locations.  We do request that when dropping toys off you ensure that they are in like new condition with no broken parts.   Please also ensure that the toys donated to the park be limited to sand box toys.  This summer there were other types dropped off that ended up spread out over the property, which created a mess and resulted in more time clearing the way for lawn maintenance.  While at the park or beach, if you see any toys that have gotten damaged please put them in the garbage box on site.

Something we all need to be diligent about is how to deal with garbage at the Park, Public Beach and Upper Wharf .  All garbage, especially food related or diapers, should be placed in one of the garbage cans inside the box by the road (at the Wharf, the box is on the east side of the rain shelter near the bottom of the new steps).  Please note: there are other garbage cans at the Park for use during social events.  Please do not put anything in these other receptacles as they are not “put out” on garbage day and will draw racoons and other unwanted critters who spread the contents around the grounds.

Thank you for helping SPA keep our public areas tidy!

Regards,
Lisa

Landmark Buildings

In the past few weeks, there have been a few landmark buildings in the local news….

First is about the new ‘jewel’ in Fenelon Falls:

On October 19th, there was an official grand opening for the new Fenelon Falls arena, which is a multi-million dollar, state-of-the-art facility.  It is a bright, beautifully designed building that will be great for hosting everything from sports to dances.  There is a single-pad arena and a community centre that can accommodate 350 people.

This year for Fenelon Falls Santa Day, Santa’s workshop will be at this new facility.  Great chance to check this new ‘jewel’ out if you haven’t already!

The other landmark building in the news is the Academy Theatre in Lindsay….

The Academy Theatre has just started and aggressive two-month campaign to raise $50,000 called Keep the Magic Alive.  This campaign is asking 1,000 people to donate $50.  That is it.  That $50 will help to keep the lights on in the theatre instead of seeing the doors close forever.

For more on the campaign, please see this article:  http://www.mykawartha.com/community/article/1528354–academy-theatre-turns-to-community-to-save-cultural-landmark

At this time, they are almost 50% there to reaching their goal!  Please try and help them out!!

Bulletin – Recent Burglaries in Sturgeon Point

This note is to inform Sturgeon Point residents and cottagers that there were several burglaries in Sturgeon Point during the week of January 9th. The burglaries resulted in electronics being stolen and doors and windows being broken. It is possible that some or all of these burglaries happened in a single day and are related as part of a single multiple-site event.

The OPP have stepped up their patrols in response to these events. SPA is in communications with the OPP to explore the possibility of initiating a “Cottage Watch” or similar program. We’ll keep you posted on this initiative.

Regrettably, Sturgeon Point has seen this kind of activity in the past. There are several actions we can all take in order to help safeguard our properties

  1. Be alert to suspicious vehicles and activities. Don’t be afraid to notify the police if you think something looks wrong.
  2. Communicate with your neighbours. Let them know about your plans, including visits by contractors and service people.
  3. Have someone check in on your property in your absence.
  4. Make sure that someone has a phone number where you can be reached in case you need to be contacted.
  5. Make sure that someone has a key to your cottage in case they or the police need access when investigating the state of your property.

Here are the OPP phone numbers you may want to have handy:

Emergencies: 911

Police Dispatch:  (888) 310-1122  (to request the presence of an officer, report a crime, etc):

Lindsay OPP Office: (705) 324-6741 [Follow up, request information, general enquiries, etc.]
