Environmental Meeting – This Saturday!!

Saturday July 20nd 10:00 AM – 12:00 Noon   Sturgeon Point Church

SPA is hosting the third annual Environment Information Session to present topics we think will be of interest to the residents of Sturgeon Point.  The Kawartha Lakes has a diverse environment from the Canadian Shield to the St Lawrence Lowlands, “The Land Between”, and the quality of this environment is of major importance to us all.  This session will feature the following guest speakers and topics

Mr David Pridham  Kawartha Lakes Conservation  Up-date on the Sturgeon Lake Management Plan

This is a very ambitious program to document the lake and near-shore characteristics and to develop recommendations that will guide land-use planning in the area.

Ms Samantha Burke  Graduate student Trent University  Benthic macro invertebrates as indicators of water quality plus a brief introduction to the Kawartha Lakes Steward Association document ‘The Algae of the Kawartha Lakes’

Copies of the ‘The Algae of the Kawartha Lakes’ will be available at the Session.

Samantha will describe how studying the critters in the water tells us a lot about the health of the lake.  There will be a quiz at the end to see how many know what Benthic macro invertebrates are.  Hint  GOOGLE it

Chris Appleton  Treasurer of Kawartha Lakes Steward Association and Resident of Sturgeon Point Outline of the Objectives and Activities of the Kawartha Lakes Steward Association (KLSA)

KLSA is involved in many interesting environmental studies and programs, such as the Sturgeon Lake Management Plan and is a valuable source of information on the issues and health of our local environment.

Lucas Tyukodi  Invasive Species Community Outreach Liaison – Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters  Discussion of invasive animals and plants: Rusty Crayfish, Round Goby, Garlic Mustard and Emerald Ash Borer.

Landmark Buildings

In the past few weeks, there have been a few landmark buildings in the local news….

First is about the new ‘jewel’ in Fenelon Falls:

On October 19th, there was an official grand opening for the new Fenelon Falls arena, which is a multi-million dollar, state-of-the-art facility.  It is a bright, beautifully designed building that will be great for hosting everything from sports to dances.  There is a single-pad arena and a community centre that can accommodate 350 people.

This year for Fenelon Falls Santa Day, Santa’s workshop will be at this new facility.  Great chance to check this new ‘jewel’ out if you haven’t already!

The other landmark building in the news is the Academy Theatre in Lindsay….

The Academy Theatre has just started and aggressive two-month campaign to raise $50,000 called Keep the Magic Alive.  This campaign is asking 1,000 people to donate $50.  That is it.  That $50 will help to keep the lights on in the theatre instead of seeing the doors close forever.

For more on the campaign, please see this article:  http://www.mykawartha.com/community/article/1528354–academy-theatre-turns-to-community-to-save-cultural-landmark

At this time, they are almost 50% there to reaching their goal!  Please try and help them out!!

The City of Kawartha Lakes & our Roads……

Roads were the topic of conversation at this week’s council meeting.

On Tuesday, the council of City of Kawartha Lakes endorsed a controversial proposed five-year roads capital plan.  This plan has Forest Road to be repaved in 2016.

Today’s Lindsay Post wrote an article about what happened at this week’s meeting and how the councilor’s felt about this road plan:  http://www.thepost.ca/2012/10/04/road-plan-tabled

Our Councilor, Brian Junkin, was quoted to say “he was not totally in favour of the five-year-plan, saying he had visited with three associations in his ward recently, having to tell one their road was “not even on the radar. They weren’t happy,” and another one they weren’t slated until 2016.   I was lucky to get out of there in one piece”

Brian Junkin did however vote in support of the plan.  He is quoted to say in the article that the plan is a work in progress and will be looked at yearly.

The SPA board is taking this topic of our roads very serious and meeting to discuss how to get them in better standing.
